What is a Common – Rail Diesel Engine Anyway?

Unlike older diesel engines, the common – rail system is a bit more high – tech. In a common – rail engine, there’s a single, shared fuel rail that stores high – pressure fuel. This fuel is then distributed to each injector at the right time and in the right amount.

The main advantage of this system is that it allows for better control over the fuel injection process. You can have multiple injections per combustion cycle, which means more efficient combustion, less noise, and reduced emissions. The Basics of the Fuel Rail

How the Fuel Gets into the Rail

The journey of fuel starts in the fuel tank. From there, a low – pressure fuel pump (usually an electric one) moves the fuel to the high – pressure pump. This low – pressure pump just gets the fuel moving and provides a basic amount of pressure to feed it into the high – pressure pump.

The high – pressure pump is a more complex beast. It has pistons or other mechanical components that compress the fuel. As these pistons move up and down, they take in fuel from the low – pressure side and then force it out at high pressure into the fuel rail.

Storing High – Pressure Fuel

Once the fuel is in the rail, it’s stored under that massive pressure. The fuel rail has to be tough enough to handle this pressure without bursting. It’s made from high – quality, strong metals like steel.

The high – pressure storage is important because it gives the engine the ability to inject fuel quickly. When the engine needs more power, there’s already a supply of high – pressure fuel ready to go. This is different from older diesel systems where the fuel pressure had to be built up each time an injection was needed.

Distributing Fuel to the Injectors

The next job of the fuel rail is to distribute the high – pressure fuel to the individual injectors. Each injector is connected to the fuel rail through a short, high – pressure fuel line.

When the engine’s control unit decides it’s time for an injection, it sends an electrical signal to the injector. This signal tells the injector to open up and let some of the high – pressure fuel into the combustion chamber.

The fuel rail makes sure that each injector has an equal supply of fuel. This is crucial for the engine to run smoothly. If one injector gets more fuel than the others, it can cause uneven combustion, which can lead to things like rough idling, power loss, and increased emissions.

The Role of the Pressure Regulator

Now, here’s the thing. Keeping the pressure in the fuel rail just right is super important. That’s where the pressure regulator comes in. The pressure regulator is a small valve that controls the amount of fuel leaving the fuel rail.

If the pressure inside the rail gets too high, the pressure regulator opens up and allows some of the fuel to flow back to the fuel tank. This helps to bring the pressure back down to a safe and optimal level. On the other hand, if the pressure is too low, the regulator can restrict the flow of fuel back to the tank, allowing the pressure in the rail to build up.

Variable Fuel Injection

One of the really neat features of the common – rail system, thanks in large part to the fuel rail, is variable fuel injection. This means that the engine can inject different amounts of fuel at different times during the combustion cycle.

For example, at low engine speeds or when the engine is idling, the engine control unit might only inject a small amount of fuel. But when you step on the accelerator and need more power, the control unit can increase the amount of fuel injected and also change the timing of the injections.

This variable injection is possible because the fuel is always stored at high pressure in the rail. The engine control unit can just send the right signals to the injectors to open and close at the right times, and the high – pressure fuel will do the rest.
